Two little girls and their dad came into the cakery today, and it absolutely made my day. The oldest, who was probably no more than 5, was gluten-free and vegan, so she got one of our gluten-free chocolate breakfast loaves. Her little sister, who was about 3, got a chocolate gluten-free cupcake. They both had the clearest blue eyes and the best manners I’ve ever seen. They said “please” and “thank you” and “yes ma’am,” and the glee on their faces when they got their chocolatey treats put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. And that’s today’s Sweet Moment.

I got a call at the cakery today from a woman who is getting married in September— in New York. When she said the words “wedding cake,” my first reaction was “uh-oh…” because we can’t ship decorated cakes due to the possibility of damage to any intricate details (though we do ship all five varieties in their standard icing overnight to anywhere in the U.S. via FedEx). But then she said that she thinks our cakes are beautiful, just the way they are. She wanted the Orange Citrus Vegan Carrot Cake for her special day, and I told her we’d be happy to make her wedding cake a World’s Best.
She told me that she fell in love with our cake one year when she couldn’t get home to be with her family for Thanksgiving. She celebrated on her own with one of our cakes, and has been celebrating with us ever since.
It’s clients like her that make my job so sweet, knowing that we create a superior product that people crave: whether it’s here in Asheville for an after-dinner treat, in New York for a wedding, or in California for a birthday, our cake brings smiles to people across the nation. And that’s today’s Sweet Moment.

We listened to oldies in the cakery today, dancing and singing along as we made our batter, washed our dishes, and folded up our signature pink boxes. “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” by Jerry Lee Lewis came on, and the giant mixer that makes our batter was clacking along in time to the music. I looked up from my work to soak in the joy of the moment, realizing how lucky I am to work with such an amazing team of people. I honestly believe that part of what makes our carrot cake the World’s Best is that it’s made with love. It’s made by people who dance and sing and smile and make goofy faces; people who love what they do. And that’s today’s Sweet Moment.
